These readers (the Die Lupe series) are extremely well-presented and the authors have balanced the sophisticated appearance so crucial to create interest and the simple language so necessary to sustain it. Die Lupe is pitched well at its target audience because young people enjoy reading about famous people. The texts include details of childhood and youth, and traumas are dealt with sympathetically, showing how problems of life have been overcome, without patronising tones. The uncomplicated language, the extensive use of the present tense with some perfect tense at Stufe 3, and the use of cognates make the texts accessible and demystify the activity of reading a book in German.
