It is generally acknowledged that psychosocial issues play a key role in the management of diabetes, in both children and adults. Diabetes has a major impact on the psychological well-being of those living with the disease and there is growing evidence that psychological problems are prevalent in people with diabetes. Psychosocial care aimed at the prevention and treatment of emotional and behavioural problems is therefore warranted, particularly as diabetes is largely managed by the patients themselves. Clinical outcomes are thus highly dependent on the motivation and daily efforts of the people with diabetes and their families.
Understanding psychosocial problems and barriers in diabetes can enable health care professionals to assist their patients more effectively.
