At nineteen, Geoffhurst is getting along just fine - he's got his own flat away from his family, his eight jars to divide his dole cheque (one for each day; one for saving), his standing order at Madame Wong's Chinese Restaurant. Then a reporter from the local newspaper offers to pay him to tell his story - the story of what happened eight years ago, when something happened that even with his lazy eye he couldn't help but stare right in the face. In the long, hot, legendary summer of '76, Geoffhurst's life was full of superheroes. His father was one of the first black professional footballers, his six-foot mother was the most glamorous woman in the neighbourhood and his aunt was a witch. His alter-ego was the Hulk, and his gang was the Four Aces. If he could get through the heat, he could get through anything. But sometimes even superheroes meet their match, and that year the storms that cracked the skies spelt more than just the end of summer; they spelt the end of Geoffhurst's childhood.

Recensione:
'Accomplished, confident and witty - Donna Daley-Clarke is a name I'll be looking out for in the future.'
INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY
'Fresh, funny, imaginative and at times heartbreakingly poignant, this is a classy debut with genuine talent oozing from the pages. Watch out Zadie Smith -- Daley-Clarke may only be a small fish today, but the pond isn't that big to begin with' VENUE MAGAZINE
'This is a taut, poised story. One tiny difference, you realise, and the tragedy might never have happened . . . powerful' DAILY TELEGRAPH 23/7
'Donna Daley-Clarke is razor-sharp on the discomforting experience of being a teenager, feeling yourself growing faster than you can cope with. And her unfussy, light but elegant prose is not restricted to the emotional - her portrayal of the 1976 summer heat is almost suffocating. Deft details, such as a brief mention of curding school milk, create a stifling effect. But this is a novel with as much warmth as it has heat. Debuts about reconciling oneself with adulthood are two-a-penny, but ones as graceful and well-paced as this are to be cherished' THE SUNDAY TELEGRAPH
'A fascinating novel . . . Daley-Clarke has produced a lively and endearing book about childhood. But LAZY EYE is also a poignant tale about families, fatal jealousies and what can happen when people love just a little too much' NEW NATION
'A powerful and imaginative debut . . . It gives an insight into the tragedy to which these problems sometimes lead. And clever girl that Donna Daley-Clarke is, she quite often lifts the doom and gloom with the insertion of episodes that are quite hilarious' IRISH EXAMINER
'Donna Daley-Clarke’s sizzling first novel takes some not particularly fresh subject matter and makes it work purely on the strength of her prose. A graduate of the UEA creative writing course, she carries the standard raised by alumni including Ian McEwan, with writing that manages to be sensual, economic and funny at the same time . . . If she can be as creative with the plot of her second novel as she is with words, it won't be the last we've heard from her' BIG ISSUE
'Studded with wit and fresh perception' THE LEEDS GUIDE
''It is sometimes the most simple ideas that are the ones of real genius' PRIDE
'This well-paced novel is a memorable portrait of a Seventies adolescence, and of the moments before an ordinary man becomes a killer' INDEPENDENT 14/7
'First released about a year ago, this award-winning book has just come out in paperback, and believe me, there is no better time of year to give this a go'
ew Nation 24/07
'Neither long, parched summers nor catalogues of childhood obsessions are particularly rare these days, but this award-winning debut set in the summer of 1976, when Geoffhurst's dad murdered his mum, rises above everyday nostalgia . . . Daley-Clarke includes afros, Shirelles songs and Chopper bikes in a narrative infused with the inflections of Caribbean English and driven by auntie Harriet's Island potions, though more subtle and arresting is Geoffhurst's shifting perspective on what made his father a murderer' GUARDIAN 12/8
