When John Rawlings is asked to investigate an infamous club which is suspected of carrying on some rather shady activities, he is intrigued. The disreputable Sir Francis Dashwood is believed to be involved, as well as some illustrious members of the British aristocracy. In disguise and accompanied by his old companion, Samuel Swann, John befriends Sir Francis and gains access to his home and family, including someone from John's past, someone whose exceptional beauty still hypnotises him.
However, Rawlings is equally distracted by the peculiar events taking place in Sir Francis's opulent house. Evil lurks in hidden corners and it seems the nobility have more than their share of skeletons to hide. Despite Rawlings' concern over his flimsy disguise, Dashwood appears to be taken with the fictitious Irish nobleman and John is invited to attend a meeting with the infamous Hellfire Club. Debauchery seems to be a strong motivation for the club's meetings, but is there a more sinister element behind to these weekends of wantonness? And is John putting himself and Sam in danger by trying to find out the truth?
