George Segal (1924-2000) is widely recognized as one of the great American sculptors of the twentieth century. He used plaster, found objects, and an innovative working process to document the life and environment around him. Born and raised in New York City, Segal spent his entire working life in New Jersey, where he used an old chicken coop as his studio. Throughout his adult life, he would venture into New York - fascinated by the hidden nooks of the city - where he transformed his experiences into works of art with universal appeal. George Segal: Street Scenes, organized by the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art, examines the artist's love affair with the city and its people.

Best known for his life-sized plaster sculptures of people engaged in everyday activities, George Segal (1924-2000) was one of the most prominent American artists of the twentieth century. This publication recounts the urban themes prevalent in Segal's sculptures over his 40-year career. "George Segal: Street Scenes"i s published concurrently with an exhibition at Wisconsin's Madison Museum of Contemporary Art. It includes essays by MMoCA curator Jane Simon and Director Emeritus of the Walker Art Center, Martin Friedman--a close friend and colleague of the artist.
