What then, has been the record of Mr. Tilden in respect to the issues which will be presented to the people of this country in the course of the pending canvass? What was his position in 1860 touching the fundamental doctrine upon which the battles for the Union were fought, the perpetual unity of the nation, for which on our side so many hundred thousands of men shed their blood or laid down their lives Was Mr. Tilden ln harmony with the Union sentiment of the country Was he in harmony with the sentiment of the country which sustained the war? Did he urge the people to sustain the Union? Did he urge the filling of our armies? Did he censure the secession movement out of which the war grew Is he anywhere or anyhow upon the record as the strong friend of the Union in its time of danger?
