This text presents an account of the development of Southampton as a settlement and a port, from its inception in AD43 until the present day. It includes a chronological analysis of the Roman Camp of Clausentum, the Anglo-Saxon town of Hamwic, and the Medieval walled-town of Southampton. There is also a commentary on the outward development which culminated in the city of today. Although it contains a selective history of the architecture of each period, a similar emphasis is placed on the social and economic forces which have shaped the development of Southampton, in which the focus of the centre has gradually moved westwards from the banks of the River Itchen in the east to the River Test in the west.
