This is a novel of love and tragedy, of loyalty and betrayal, at once witty and wise. Ex-journalist Rachael Raikes is asked by her ex-boss to look up and interview a French Resistance hero called Lionel Cater. It seems a simple enough excercise, but it upsets the precious new life Rachael has made for herself abd her husband Roger after their flight from London and some very dubious old acquaintances. Meeting Cater also throws into the shade the arrival of Rachael'sover-enthusiastic sister, Pansy, in mid-flight from her MP husband and seeminglyintent on usurping Rachael's place in her own marital bed.
