Hardcover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. N.C. Wyeth (illustratore). Charles Scribner's Sons, New York. 1947. Hardcover. Edition/Printing not stated. Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Good; light shelfwear to head, tail, and tips; suntoned spine; bump indentation on the rear board. No DJ. Blue cloth boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine; Scribner logo on the front board in gilt. Clean internals; internal hinges are sound and not split. 411 pp 8vo. This work has all the fascination of a romance, yet it is both biographical and historical. The events occur in the time of Queen Elizabeth and with the adventures of the hero of the story are interwoven the lives of many heroic men, to whom the author believes that England owes much of her naval and commercial glory. To give these persons their just due seems t be the design of the writer. The book is ably written in commemoration of these men of Devon- "Drakes and Hawkins, Gilberts and Raleighs, Grenvilles and Oxenhams, their voyages and battles, their heroic lives and heroic deaths." The self-sacrifice and heroism, the faith and valor depicted n these pages with the romance connected with it, invest the story with more than ordinary interest, for we consider it a work of uncommon vigor and power. A clean very presentable copy. 10 color plates.

This was a raid in which the Spanish colonial city of Caracas in South America was captured and sacked by privateers led by Amyas Preston and George Somers.Charles Kingsley dedicated the novel to Sir James Brooke, of Sawak, (East Indies), who was the model for the hero of Joseph Conrad's novel Lord Jim." Hardcover. Condizione: Poor. No Jacket. Poor condition only because this copy is missing all pages between the fly-title page and the list of illustrations on vii, including the title page and the publication page (The 1948 date is a guess used to distinguish this copy from recent reprints with ISBNs and stock publisher photos that are added by Abebooks to editions without a stated year of publication.) Otherwise a good plus small 4to (9-1/8" tall x 7") hardcover in NO dj. Blue boards with a blue publisher's design on an embossed gilt text block on the upper board, gilt spine lettering. The boards bottom corners are lightly bumped and rubbed; the spine is somewhat sun faded and the spine edges lightly rubbed with just a touch of fraying. The spine and lower board have a few very faint or small soiling spots but this is minimal. The text pages are somewhat yellowed but unmarked; all nine color plates are present and sharp! Starter before the illustration list; remaining contents are firmly bound. NOT an ex-library!.
