Prima edizione Copia autografata
Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good+. First Edition; First Printing. Autograph; Contents clean and secure in original blue cloth binding in very nice dustjacket. Inscribed and Signed by the author on ffep -- "To Kermit Roosevelt / in old friendship / Teddy Kollek" Teddy Kollek is the world renowned mayor of Jerusalem who presided over the unification of the city after the Six Day War. These affectionate and enthusiastic memoirs of the popular Israeli politician with an appraisal of his life, his work, and the achievements of his country. One of Kollek's early encounters with Kermit Roosevelt in 1944 is memorialized in this book. "on one of these trips in 1944, I took along Kermit and Ashibald Roosevelt, whom I had met on a trip to Egypt. They were both Arabists, so I took them riding up the Golan Heights to the Arab town of Fiq. ." Kermit "Kim" Roosevelt, Jr. (1916 - 2000) was the grandson of President Theodore Roosevelt. He was a career intelligence officer who served in the Office of Strategic Services and was the mastermind of the Central Intelligence Agency's Operation Ajax, which orchestrated the coup against Iran's democratically-elected Mohammed Mossadegh administration, and returned Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran, to Iran's Peacock Throne in August 1953 for the purpose of returning Western control of Middle Eastern oil supplies. Assigned to Egypt, Roosevelt impressed his colleagues with Project FF, which encouraged the Free Officers Movement to carry out a coup d'état in 1952, and Roosevelt developed close CIA links to the new leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser. In Egypt under Allen Dulles, Kim Roosevelt supervised the CIA's operation to undermine the popular General Neguib and encourage the rise to power of Gamul Abdul Nasser. Even before his decisive victory, Nasser was communicating through Roosevelt to make a settlement with Great Britain. These back channel negotiations eventually produced the treaty signed in October 1954. Hugh Wilford: "[Roosevelt Jr.] had this notion of America forming an alliance with the Arab countries as they emerged from under the sway of Britain and France. He was very concerned with backing Arab nationalists in the region. He saw that as the best way of keeping it within the American orbit, as the Cold War was gathering momentum." The Eisenhower administration, including Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, was initially quite sympathetic towards the Arabist agenda of Roosevelt's and his colleagues and willing to oppose Middle Eastern regimes seen "as backing the Soviet Union rather than the U.S." In discussing Roosevelt's role, Wilford describes him as being among "the most important intelligence officers of their generation in the Middle East." Kollek (1911-2007) was the famed Hungarian-born Israeli politician and five-term mayor of Jerusalem (1965-93) -- one of the most influential figures of 20th century Israel. "In this book Teddy Kollek, the well-known Mayor of Jerusalem, weaves together the story of his own full life and that of the most fascinating city in the world. From the time of his youth in Vienna, Teddy Kollek was tremendously energetic, personable - and committed to the Zionist movement. In 1935 he arrived on the dock in Haifa, 24-years-old, penniless, but, as he writes, "everything about me was just as I had pictured it - the landscape, the work, and the pioneer spirit. I was home." Theodore (nee Tivadar) Kollek (1911-2007) was named after Theodor Herzl. How could he not have become a Zionest? Born in Hungary, his family moved to Vienna, Austria when he was a child and from where they all emigrated to what would become modern Israel in 1935. Kollek helped to found the Ein Gev Kibbutz and became active in politics, serving five terms as mayor of Jerusalem. Among his honors, Kollek was awarded the 1988 Israel Prize. Kollek died in 2007 and is buried on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. The co-author on this volume is the author's son, the film director, Amos Kollek. ; Signed by Author.
