No Binding. Condizione: Collectible-Very Good. 8.5 x 11" letter to accompany the return of Dylan Thomas "which I borrowed from you six months ago". He goes on to say "My commercial short story attempt was a dismal failure." and that he has been working "on my half-completed 2d novel." It won honorable mention at the Joseph Henry Jackson awards, so he is back to writing. Murayama has had two novels published about Japanese American life in Hawaii. The first, "All I'm Asking for is My Body", was published by the Supa Press, San Francisco, 1975, and reprinted by the University of Hawaii in 1988. His second published novel was "Five Years on the Rock", University of Hawaii, 1994. This letter precedes his first published work by about 20 years. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1994 University of Hawaii Press (Honolulu, Hawaii), 6 1/4 x 9 1/4 inches tall blue cloth hardcover in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, gilt lettering to spine, blue endpapers, [4], 155 pp. Very slight soiling to covers. Otherwise, a very good to near fine copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a moderately rubbed and edgeworn dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival Brodart sleeve. Uncommon. ~KK~ [1.5P] Milton Atsushi Murayama (1923-2016) was an American novelist and playwright. A Nisei, he is perhaps best remembered for his 1975 All I Asking for Is My Body, which is considered a classic novel of the experiences of Japanese Americans in Hawaii before and during World War II. Here, Murayama returns to the places and people of his earlier fiction ? to the sugar plantation company towns and sleepy villages of Maui, and to the resilient Oyama family. Five Years on a Rock is the story of Sawa Oyama, the mother who plays a major role in All I Asking for Is My Body. In a spirited voice full of courage and wit, Sawa tells of her arrival in Hawaii in 1915 as a seventeen-year-old picture bride. But her hope of returning to Japan after 'five years on a rock' wanes as the five years stretch to twenty, during which six children are born, her husband?s fishing business succeeds then fails, and the family debt grows.
