From the rear cover: "This Leavenworth Paper examines both the theory and practice of U.S. Army counterattack doctrine at the outbreak of the Korean War The case study chosen for examination is the First Battle of the Natkong Bulge, 6-19 August 1950, a part of the defense of the Pusan Perimeter During the two-week period covered by this study, the 24th Infantry Division and its attached units attempted at least sixty-one counterattacks of company size or larger Significant elements of [US Army counterattack doctrine] were not followed by the 24th Infantry Division during the battle. This failure to implement valid doctrinal concepts appears both to have delayed the ultimate victory and increased its cost." Chapter notes. Bibliography. Original printed wraps. Keywords: Military art and science, tactics, US Army history . Softcover. Very Good condition. xiii, 135pp .

Octavo, black cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, 284 pp. Very Good, in a Near-Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: As part of Ulysses S. Grant's overall strategic plan to win the Civil War, Major General Benjamin Butler's Federal army advanced up the James River in the spring of 1864 in an effort to operate against Richmond from the south while the Army of the Potomac approached the Confederate capital from the north. Opposed by Confederate forces hastily gathered from three states by General P. G. T. Beauregard, Butler's army seized a base at Bermuda Hundred Landing and maneuvered for ten days between Richmond and Petersburg before being defeated at the Battle of Drewry's Bluff. Withdrawing into a fortified position at Bermuda Hundred, Butler made three abortive attempts to seize Petersburg before the arrival of the Army of the Potomac in June ended both Butler's independence and the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. Drawing upon hundreds of sources, including over sixty unpublished accounts, Back Door to Richmond is the first book-length study of the Bermuda Hundred Campaign. As such, it significantly modifies the standard interpretation of the campaign, which held that the Federal effort was an abject failure, caused almost entirely by the blundering of an incompetent Benjamin Butler, who allowed his army to be "bottled up" by a smaller Confederate force. Robertson shows that Butler's operations instead achieved a significant degree of success by gaining an important base, disrupting Confederate supply lines for nearly two weeks, and distracting 20,000 Confederate troops until late May. Butler's inability to achieve more lofty goals must therefore be shared by Grant, whose concept of the campaign remained confused throughout, and by Butler's principal subordinates, whose contentious behaviour caused numerous tactical errors. Back Door to Richmond also devotes careful analysis to the Confederate leaders who successfully defended their capital's southern approaches with limited resources. Civil War, Nonfiction, War Between the States, War of Rebellion, Union, United States History, American History, Military History, Military Leadership, Confederacy, War of Northern Aggression, American Biography. aslic.
