Libro
Trade paperback. Condizione: Very good. Fourth printing [stated]. x, 262 pages. Illustrations. World Premiere Television Movie Nominated for Best Picture sticker on cover. With a new Afterword by Dr. Thornton. Inscribed and dated by Dr. Thornton on title page. Additional inscription by author referencing the relationship between the recipient and the author's daughter on page 1. Yvonne S. Thornton (born November 21, 1947) is an American obstetrician-gynecologist and author. Her father, a ditchdigger had a dream for each of his children, all African-American girls, to become doctors. The struggle in spite of economic, racial and gender-based boundaries later became the subject of The Ditchdigger's Daughters. She cited her experiences in her childhood as being highly influential on her choice to attend medical school. Thornton graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 1981, Thornton became the first African-American woman in the United States to become board-certified in maternal-fetal medicine. Derived from Publisher's Weekly: The remarkable power of family values as articulated by an uneducated black man and his wife is played out in this loving memoir. Thornton is one of the daughters born to a laborer in a New Jersey shore town who was almost obsessed with the importance of education for his children and the nurturance of their talents. He monitored their musical training, scrimping where necessary to pay for their lessons. Eventually the Thornton Sisters Band was formed-a family enterprise whose financial success became the source of the daughters' college tuition. Although only two of the girls fulfilled their father's dream that they become doctors, all of them have successful careers. This picture by Thornton and Coudert of a black man's single-minded devotion to his family is a tribute to an extraordinary father who transcended racial prejudice to raise appreciative daughters to be independent women.
