Prima edizione
First Robinson edition, deluxe issue. A prolific illustrator of children's books, Robinson is known for his decorative style inspired by Dürer, the pre-Raphaelites, and Japanese prints. "In his planning of the book as a whole, he developed the Art and Crafts tradition of the book as a work of art" (Peppin & Micklethwait, p. 256). Edited by the writer and biographer Walter Copeland Jerrold, this is a beautifully illustrated collection of classic children's tales in prose and verse by different authors including Aesop, La Fontaine, and William Cowper. Upon publication, the book was positively reviewed in The Bookman: "Mr Charles's Robinson's pictures are an especial pleasure; the fables have given him scope for exercising both the grace and the humour of his versatile genius, and he has made the fullest and happiest use of it" (p. 196). A trade issue in red cloth was published simultaneously. Brigid Peppin & Lucy Micklethwait, Dictionary of British Book Illustrators. The Twentieth Century, 1983; "[Review of] The Big Book of Fables", The Bookman, Vol. XLIII, 1912-13. Quarto. Original white cloth, lettering and decoration on spine and front cover in gilt, top edge gilt. Frontispiece and 28 mounted colour plates with tissue guards, black and white illustrations in text. Gift inscription on front free endpaper, small abrasion from old bookseller's label removal to rear endpapers. Upper corners lightly bumped, couple of tiny punctures to front cover, edges foxed, contents generally clean: a very good copy.
