The impact on Japanese cities of social and technological change is the focus of this collection of essays by Akira Suzuki, editor of Telescope magazine and Professor of Design at Kobe University. Entertaining, but equally thought-provoking, the essays describe urban rituals and catastrophes, and suggest lessons that might be learnt from them. Progressing in scale from the minimal dwelling space for the single urbanite to the dispersed urban infrastructure, they put forward a new conception of urbanism that takes account of the changes in information technology that have begun to render national boundaries meaningless.

Condizione: New. 24.9 x 17 cm, illustrated,120 pp. 'Given today's multitude of demands on the built environment, the role of the architect has extended from being a mere designer and builder to acting as a mediator within a much larger network of expertise. This mediation takes place on multiple levels within the building industry, between public, clients and designers, and between public, clients and designers, and between the actual design and its environment. To achieve this, the field of work, the tools of design and the representation of architects needs to develop. The architect has to design the design process itself. Mediating Architecture demonstrates the extended role of the architect through the applied work of AA's Diploma Unit 14 within London's Thames Gateway over three consecutive years. A series of essays reflect this methodology from the multi-disciplinary perspectives of architecture, urban design, landscape design and philosophy.'.

Famously, he began with his own name. His resonant pseudonym, Le Corbusier, meant 'crow-like', and he spent most of his career observing the wide horizon of worldwide developments.

Broschur / Softcover. 1. Aufl. (AA Diploma 6). Sprache: Englisch / Christopher C.M. Lee & Sam Jacoby (Herausgeber Eds.) / This collection of student projects from the AA`s Diploma Unit 6 encapsulates a generational shift. After the past decade of deep (and sometimes, it would appear, deeply self-satisfied) explorations into new digital and computational design tools, Typological Formations demarcates a return to the city as the overt site, not just for architecture but for architectural thinking. A quick glance through this book will confirm the obvious: sophisticated parametric tools are all over these projects, but they are no longer a topic or focus in and of themselves.Instead, such tools are merely brought to bear on the design agenda: the search for `renewable` building types that are able to negotiate the rapidly changing circumstances of cities in an era of global capitalism. Already this search has yielded some incredible early results. With this book, the idea of an architectural `type` seems more supple - that is, more differentiated and therefore more relevant and productive - than ever. Typological Formations is nothing less than a manifesto for a return to projects and project-based forms of architectural knowledge today. Created as part of the 2008 tenth anniversary celebrations of the Design Research Laboratory, the AA DRL TEN Pavilion is one of those built projects that push the conventions in architecture and structural engineering as well as the building materials industry. From Mies van der Rohe's 1929 Barcelona Pavilion to the Serpentine Gallery's annual summer pavilions designed by architects such as Toyo Ito, Zaha Hadid and Rem Koolhaas, the production of pavilions has been at the forefront of architectural experimentation. Because of their temporary nature and loose functional requirements, pavilions can be realised as a pure expression of the way in which building materials are manufactured, organised, managed and assembled. People might not automatically categorise pavilions as great works of architecture, but they have nonetheless provided a vital platform for challenging current practice and making it evolve into the future. Created as part of the 2008 tenth anniversary celebrations of the Design Research Laboratory, the AA DRL TEN Pavilion is one of those built projects that push the conventions in architecture and structural engineering as well as the building materials industry. A fullscale construction built by a group of students as part of their academic activities, the pavilion was conceived as a way of bringing together digital explorations in architectural design with state-of-the-art manufacturing processes and advanced structural calculations based on non-linear stress analysis. This book, edited by Yusuke Obuchi and Alan Dempsey, recounts the story of the creation of the DRL TEN Pavilion and through it illustrates the design, development and assembly processes involved as well as the structure's place within the evolving teaching methodologies of the DRL as a whole.

This instalment in the "Architecture Words" series collects together for the first time a number of key essays by the New York-based architect and critic Mark Rakatansky. Following its title, the book is broken down into three sections: Tectonic, Acts, Desires and Doubts. In each, Rakatansky covers a series of subjects, from Louis Kahn's relationship to the brick to a more general polemic involving identity and politics in contemporary architecture, and in a writerly voice that varies from the third-person narrative of the scholarly essay to the transcript of an email exchange with fellow academic Sarah Whiting, discussing two recent books by architect Greg Lynn.

Accompanying the school's end-of-year show, the book features hundreds of drawings, models, installations, photographs and other materials documenting the world's most international and experimental school of architecture. The work of the AA's 600+ full-time students ranges from small-scale studies and drawings to large 1:1 working prototypes, interactive media and built installations, including the annual AA summer pavilion in Bedford Square. The book also includes selected projects originating from the AA's Hooke Park campus in Dorset and our Research Cluster initiatives as well as from the immensely diverse design workshops and public events associated with the AA's global Visiting School, undertaken in more than a dozen cities since its launch in early 2008. Complementing these projects, this book also offers a snapshot of the AA's vibrant public programme of lectures and exhibitions and its equally pioneering catalogue of publications and other printed media.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 1 volume : illustrations (black and white, and colour) ; 23 cm. Memo for Nemo' is an account of the human inhabitation of the undersea, in fact and fiction. It takes as its starting point Jules Verne's novel 'Twenty Thousand Leagues under the Sea', with the 'Nautilus' submarine and its captain Nemo - inventor, explorer, oceanologist, gastronome, musician and terrorist. The undersea is examined as a zone created both by exploration and invention, from the earliest attempts to photograph and descend into the depths with deep-sea devices, through the 1960s experiments and actual inhabitation, such as the US 'Sealab' and Cousteau's 'Conshelf', to contemporary remote surveillance of the rapidly changing oceans. This actual history is paralleled and subverted by a fictitious history of films such as 'The Abyss', 'The Life Aquatic' and other hallucinogenic delights. This book is the second title in a planned trilogy of books each exploring specific coastal and aquatic terrains. The first book was Marseille Mix (2010) and the final part will be Hop Baltic (2015).

At the start of the 21st century there has been a marked shift - both economic and political - from the West to the East. Dubai vies with other Gulf cities to create the ultimate Middle Eastern hub for business, culture and leisure. Chinas feverish construction industry is operating at an unprecedented scale, as it builds higher and faster than anyone else. "The contributors in this book -- architects, critics and documenters -- have responded to the invitation to prise the fact from the fiction, with particular focus on both the Gulf emirate of Dubai and the rapid urbanisation of China. Are cities from zero universal blueprints of a better world for all of us, or doomed, out-dated models of already extinct ideologies?"--Cover.

God & Co is published to accompany the exhibition of the work of the French Montreal-based artist and architect François Dallegret (1937) .Dallegret's own life and work denies anything so predictable as a neat synopsis, but in essence his work, beginning in Paris in the late 1950s and early 60s, and later taking in New York and Montreal, absorbs everything from intricate line drawings for a series of astrological vehicles and designs for a number of machines (from those that assist in cooking a meal to others that generate literature) to the 'A Home Is Not a House' collaboration with the critic Reyner Banham; a drugstore/gallery in Montreal; proposals for a new Montreal Palais Metro; designs for chairs, more cars and yet more machines; a film collaborative set up to shoot a western; contributions to the Montreal 67 Expo; engraved bars of soap; subversive credit cards; 'ironique' villas and light installations. The book will illustrate a great many of these works and contains essays on Dallegret's life and legacy by the historians Alessandra Ponte and Laurent Stalder.

Stefan Sebök was a Hungarian-born architect who worked with Walter Gropius in Dessau and Berlin in the late 1920s, and then with fellow Hungarian emigré László Moholy-Nagy on his famous Light Prop, and later still moved to the Soviet Union to work with the constructivist architects Ginzburg, the Vesnin brothers and El Lissitzky. In between he carried out numerous projects of his own and found himself central to a key generation of emerging modern architects in Dresden, Berlin and Moscow. Details of this life are revealed through this book written by Sebök's niece, Lilly Dubowitz, who meticulously pieces together clues and details of her uncle's life and work as if like an architectural detective.

Each entry has been contributed by a different author, and represents a personal position as much as an attempt to frame the topic in a broader context; the issue therefore maps both a landscape of current concerns, interests, and ambitions, and also an overview of diverse positions and forms of practice. For AA unit masters Ricardo de Ostos and Nannette Jackowski the answer is a resolute 'no'. Instead they offer an alternative reading of 'environment', in which the brutal and lyrical are juxtaposed through visually compelling narratives of architecture. Illustrating their approach, this book presents ten years of student projects, all prompted by the unit's visits to extreme geographic contexts from the rainforests of Brazil to the quarries of northern India. With additional photographic documentation and conversations with Lebbeus Woods, Geoff Manaugh and Peter Cook, Scavengers & Other Creatures in Promised Lands explores the gripping power of myth and fiction as radical narratives for imagining the near future of cities and forests.'.

Unfortunately, until the advent AA Files,' writes AA Chairman Alvin Boyarsky in 1981 in the opening pages of the first issue of the long-running journal, 'few glimpses have been available and certainly no documents exist recording aspects of this all-important phenomenon.' In this student-edited issue AA Files 76 looks back on 37 years of not only glimpsing architecture as it happened at the AA, but also of writing about architecture and, through the idiosyncrasies, interests and generosity of its authors and editors, extending those conversations far beyond Bedford Square. Presented in facsimile, AA Files X revisits the voices, ideas, drawings and designs that have filled its pages for nearly four decades.'.

Tales from the Dark Side of the City is a book series that forms an atlas to the territories and stories of a city that stretches across the entire planet, a city that sits between documentary and fiction, a city of dislocated sites, of drone footage and hidden-camera investigations, of interviews and speculative narratives, of toxic objects and distributed matter from distant grounds. They are a collection of tales from the constellation of elsewheres that are conjured into being by the city's wants and needs, fears and dreams."--Publisher's note.
