Libro Prima edizione
Hardcover. Condizione: Good. First Edition. Rose is a wonderfully rich and intricate novel set in nineteenth-century Wigan, a town located in the coal country of Lancashire. Its protagonist, Jonathan Blair, is a mining engineer who has been chased out of Africa for "stealing" from the missionaries' Bible Fund in order to pay off the porter of his expedition into the interior of the Gold Coast; he is now down and out in London.Blair's employer, Bishop Hannay, promises to send him back to Africa if he can find John Maypole, the curate who was engaged to his daughter, Charlotte Hannay, when he disappeared three months previously without explanation. Charlotte herself is an ill-tempered young woman who takes an instant dislike to Blair when he tries to investigate her fiancé's disappearance. Other characters include assorted townspeople, miners at the Hannay family mine, and Rose Molyneux, a "pit girl" with whom Blair falls in love.Exceeding even the high expectations of Smith's readers, Rose is richly detailed and compelling--his most accomplished and fascinating novel to date.

Cloth. Condizione: Very Good Minus. First Edition. Closed, oblong, 14 by 16 cm. Opens up, with two leporellos, one stretching out left, the other right, to be 18 feet in length, or about 550 cm. Condition: spine possibly rebacked, with cloth band overlaid on inside covers, covering part of paper pastedown endpapers, coming close to textual content printed on these papers but not sacrificiing content. Still, intrusive and unattractive. Some soiling on the cloth covers, including minor dampstaining, possible ink blotches, etc. The leporellos are age toned and some edge grubbiness. Edge wormholing affecting some panels at folds but not intruding on visual content. Notwithstanding these defects, we would comfortably grade the condition as very good, or very good minus.

The General's Post Office Engraving with aquatint and hand colour. A view of the General Post Office in the City of London, showing the mail coaches departing. The Post Office was designed by Sir Robert Smirke and built between 1823 and 1829, suggesting that the print was made soon after to celebrate its opening. The British Library holds copies by a further two different publishers, suggesting that the print was popular. James Pollard (1792-1867) was a British painter well known for his sporting and mail coach scenes. BM 1917,1208.2253 and 1873,0712.534 (different publisher); LOC 96507261; Selway 47.
