Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. First American Edition. (no dust jacket) [a very worn copy, with bumping and exposure of boards at all corners, extreme age-toning to pages, some light dampstaining at the bottom of a number of pages, and heavy annotation in Chapter 1 -- in other words, kind of a mess, but with an interesting piece of ephemera laid in (read on)]. The Irish writer's first and best-known book (published when he was just 22), a memoir of his early life and struggles with the cerebral palsy with which he was born. This copy of the book is nothing to look at, but it's accompanied by an interesting item: a 16-page booklet issued by United Cerebral Palsy of New York City, as part of a fundraising campaign for which Brown was the figurative "poster child." (I say figurative because I have no evidence that the organization ever featured him on an actual poster.) The first half of the booklet reprints the book's Chapter 1, entitled "The Letter 'A'," and the remainder is devoted to a recitation of UCP's philosophy, goals, facilities and services -- all in the service of wringing as much sympathy (and the most contributions) as possible out of the reader, using Brown's life to vividly illustrate "the loneliness and terror of a bright and sensitive person trying to communicate with the world through the barrier of Cerebral Palsy." The last four pages of the booklet provide a full list of the members of the organization's Campaign Committee, of which Bob Hope was the National Life Chairman. (Christy Brown was notably potrayed by actor Daniel Day-Lewis in the 1989 film adaptation of the book; both Day-Lewis and Brenda Fricker, playing his mother, won Academy Awards for their performances.).
