Two volumes bound in one (as issued), pp. lxxii, 168; xv, [i], 200; plus a 24pp. supplement at the end (see below); with engraved frontispiece portrait of Rochester and three other plates in volume I, and one plate in volume II; rather thumbed throughout, and with some minor stains, but generally a good sound copy, rebound in modern half calf, spine with black morocco label. A very uncommon collection of poetry by noble poets of the Restoration period: in essentials, this is the text first published by Edmund Curll in 1707 as the Works of Rochester and Roscommon, but it proved popular, and over the years other poets were added. Dorset (1714), Devonshire (1721) and Buckingham (1731) became part of the collection, and in 1739 the title was changed to the Poetical Works. This is a close reprint (but not a reissue) of the 1739 edition, using the same rather crude plates, beginning with a portrait of Rochester as the frontispiece to the first volume. As part of the preliminary matter, the collection includes a picture of Rochester as his alter ego, the quack doctor Alexander Bendo, with his speech made on Tower Hill (pp. xliv-lv), and a portrait of him making his pitch. At the very end is a supplement of 24pp, without title page, headed 'The Cabinet of Love'. In this small additional section, which is not referred to on the title page and which perhaps was only added on request some especially risqué poems are printed: 'The Discovery', 'Dildoides' (attributed to Samuel Butler), 'The Delights of Venus' (attributed to 'Meursius'), and 'Lady Sandwich's Cabinet'. ESTC locates three copies in the UK, one in Germany (Berlin), five in the US and one in New Zealand (Otago).
